Ryanair is the largest carrier in Europe and Poland. Only this year will it carry around 18 million passengers in our country, which will be a fresh record. However, as of 1 August, travellers will gotta adapt to the fresh rules of hand baggage.

The rules of Ryanair's hand baggage raised many doubts this year. In Wrocław, at the request of passengers, their size is checked by foot. But now the revolution is coming. As we informed on Temat.pl, Ryanair will let to take on board more free hand luggage. Now we know when.

Ryanair amends the rules on hand baggage. A bigger backpack since August

On Tuesday, July 8, Ryanair president Michael O'Leary appeared in Warsaw to inform about improvement plans at Modlin Airport. On the occasion of the editorial atTemat.pl, she asked about changes concerning hand baggage.

– The European Commission has defined the rules for a free handbag. They said it would be 40 by 30 by 15 centimeters. Our current baggage limits are 40 by 25 by 20 cm. We'll increase it to 40 by 30 by 20 cm. So our minimum free handbag will be larger than European dimensions," said O'Leary in an interview with our editorial board.

From the beginning, it was known that changing the rules that had been in force for many years would take any time. In his interview with the O'Leary theme, he confirmed that the revolution would inactive take place on holiday. The fresh rules should enter into force on 1 August.

– We are expanding our baggage meters in Poland and throughout Europe. We'll finish this trial by the end of July. And as of about 1 August, passengers will be able to bring on board a somewhat larger free handbag – he gave us the CEO of Ryanair.

However, he added that this change would not make passengers halt paying for undersized baggage during airport checks. – any passengers will always effort to bring a bigger bag. We keep telling them: listen, there is no problem with baggage charges if you just follow the rules. And these are very simple. If the bag fits in the pattern, enters on board, no problem. If it does not fit in the pattern, you pay – O'Leary signed.

Back to the plane with a free small suitcase? Ryanair’s president laughed at the proposal

Increasing the size of the free hand luggage will make us take a backpack with a maximum capacity of 24, not 20 litres to the Ryanair aircraft. This will besides make it easier due to the fact that the same dimensions can have hand luggage in Wizz Air. Tourists will so not gotta have 2 different backpacks for both carriers.

At the same time, it is worth remembering that on 24 June, the European Parliament's Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) adopted a draft that lays down firm rules for hand baggage. According to them, on board the plane for free, we would take baggage of 55 x 40 x 20 cm and a weight of 7 kg. This proposal was laughed at by the president of Ryanair, considering that it was unrealistic.

– It is an idiotic proposal, but the European Parliament loves to do politics. I mean, 1 day they'll say: oh, everyone should have the right to fly free across Europe, no 1 should pay for air travel. They come up with these stupid ideas, but no of them actually work," O'Leary emphasized.

– Safety must be first. So at Ryanair, we do that 50% of passengers can bring 2 bags, and the another half can only bring 1 bag, due to the fact that that's all they can fit on the plane. And if the European Parliament wants to come up with any crazy idea, anyone can bring 2 bags, 3 bags or 4 bags, no, they can't, due to the fact that they won't fit – he ended the discussion of Ryanair's CEO.
