Russia seeks to take east Ukraine and completely neutralize what will stay of it. The United States is ready to agree, but they cannot force Europe or Ukraine itself to accept it. This is what 2 leading American political scientists talked about in an online discussion.

John Mearsheimer and Sergei Karaganov spoke on the "Al Arabia English" channel. Mearsheimer is simply a political scientist from the University of Chicago, known for developing the explanation of offensive realism in global politics. Karaganov is simply a polytologist and advisor to Putin, at the same time head of the Russian abroad and Defence Policy Council. Many Polish experts draw attention to his texts and opinions.

John Mearsheimer argued that Donald Trump was not bluffing to make a deal with Russia.

It's a historical moment. In my opinion, there is no uncertainty that Trump has completely abandoned Joe Biden's policy on Ukraine and Russia. He adopted a policy that was completely opposed. Firstly, Trump wants to importantly improve relations between the United States and Russia. He wants the US and Russia to get closer to each other, have friendly relations again. Not like Biden. I think that Trump understands that the United States and the West have lost the war in the Ukraine at all and that there is now a deal to be made, due to the fact that there is no way for the Americans to save the situation said Mearsheimer. As he stressed, a large proportion of Americans and Europeans do not consider it good, but the Russians are most likely satisfied.

Karaganov said there is no specified satisfaction. – I am not as pleased as John [Mearsheimer] thinks, due to the fact that on our way to full triumph over Europe and Ukraine we can just get stuck He said. However, the Russian stated that the war had been fought so far between “West and Russia in Ukraine”, and Ukrainians were utilized as “gun meat”. president Donald Trump is now beginning to cut losses, but in fact Joe Biden has already started it.

Initially, he proclaimed [a willingness to] complete triumph over Russia. A year or a year or a year and a half ago, he realized that a full triumph could not be achieved, alternatively a full defeat, a failure like Afghanistan, or a atomic war in Europe He said. In his opinion, president Donald Trump set himself the goal of rebuilding America's interior policy and in order to have freedom of movement, he must end the war he is losing.

In Mearsheimer's opinion, the problem is that the United States is incapable to force an agreement between Europe and Ukraine. – I don't think Trump can force an agreement. I think he can only negociate with the Russians. If they do, there will be no 100% guarantee, but there can be an agreement that will end the war if the Ukrainians and Europeans agree. Getting Russians and Americans to agree is just the first step, in a way easy. It will be much harder to encourage an agreement between Europeans and Ukrainians in particular – he said.

Karaganov stated that the Russians believed in the anticipation of reaching an agreement with the Americans, recognizing that the US would yet become not only a rival, but in a sense besides a partner of Russia. We could talk about "friendly competition".

According to Mearsheimer, specified a level of common relations is possible. The United States will, of course, always compete with Russia, but due to the American focus on China, Moscow can indeed become a "friendly rival" for Washington. However, there are problems in his opinion. 1 of these is the Russians' deficiency of assurance in the United States, which can lead to advanced caution and limited cooperation.

Karaganov did not hide Russia's goals in Ukraine either. He stated that the Russians were not seeking to occupy the full Ukraine, and this was due to the large difficulties and problems that would origin them. – We don't want to take all of Ukraine back. It was a dense burden for the russian Union, in terms of the biggest subsidies. We should unite with the Russian provinces of stricto sense. Then we would like to have a completely demilitarized and neutral buffer region built from what was left of Ukraine. – he said. However, according to Karaganova, Europe does not want to accept this situation, and this will provoke further conflict.
