In the escalation of diplomatic tensions between Russia and Romania, the Kremlin expelled 2 Romanian diplomats from Moscow – a defence attache and its deputy. This decision was presented as a direct consequence to Bucharest's earlier actions, which considered the Russian military typical to be ‘unwanted person’.
Russia responds to Romania's decision
In the Russian Ministry of abroad Affairs of Romania charge d’affaires Lilian Burda was given an authoritative note announcing that 2 Romanian diplomats had received position ‘Adverse persons’. Moscow stressed that this was a reaction to Romania's earlier decision, which in March considered a persona non grata of the Russian defence attache and its deputy.
– Bucharest decision ‘she was not motivated’ – stated the Russian MFA. As Polsat News reminds, Russian diplomats were expelled from Romania in early March, the day after the authorities accused Russia of "a series of hybrid actions to undermine democracy".
Background of the conflict: Accusations of interference in Romanian politics
The diplomatic dispute is connected to allegations from Russian intelligence services. Moscow has determined the decision of the Romanian prosecutor to charge right-wing politician Calin Georgesc as ‘absurd and totally unfounded’, suggesting that it was inspired by Brussels.
The Romanian Constitutional Court upheld the decision to exclude Georgesc from the repeated presidential elections to be held in May. The court rejected all 11 complaints submitted by the politician and its decision is final.
Election scandal or political game?
Calin Georgescu, who won the first circular of elections, was deprived of the chance to launch in a repeated vote. His supporters consider this decision to be a manifestation of the system's conflict with opposition.
George Simion, leader of the Alliance for Romanian Unity (AUR), in conversation with the channel “To Things” called exclusion Georgescu ‘scandal action’. – "This has shown how far the strategy can go to keep control" – he said. In his opinion, it wasn't about "Legalism, only about political manoeuvre".
Summary: expanding voltages on the Moscow-Bukareszt line
Russia's expulsion of Romanian diplomats is another phase in an exacerbating dispute between the 2 countries. Moscow consistently rejects allegations of interference in Romania's interior affairs, while Bucharest maintains that Russia's actions are destabilising.
