Relations between the Russian and Polish abroad Offices stay tense. The manager of the Consular Department of the Russian Ministry of abroad Affairs, Alexey Klimov, referred again to the issue of the closure of the Polish consulate in Królewiec. This is simply a consequence to the decision of Minister Radosław Sikorski of May this year.
In July, a message about the closure of the Polish diplomatic mission in Russia appeared on the Russian embassy website in Poland. This decision is simply a retaliation for the early closure of the Russian consulate in Krakow.
"On 11 July Russia was summoned to the Ministry of abroad Affairs of the Ministry of abroad Affairs of Russia in Russia, which was given a note announcing that as a means of retaliatory the withdrawal of the approval of the General Consulate of Russia in Krakow by the Polish authorities on 30 June 2025, the Russian side has since 29 August 2025 withdrawn its consent to the operation of the General Consulate of Poland in Kaliningrad" – we read.
It is further stated: “This step was triggered by unjustified and hostile actions of the Polish side, which expressed in the regulation under the invented pretext of Russian consular presence in the territory of the Republic of Poland”,
Retaliation of Russia to Polish Ministry of abroad Affairs
Director of the Consular Department of the Russian Ministry of abroad Affairs Alexey Klimov quoted by TASS confirmed that as of 29 August 2025 the Russian Ministry will retreat the approval of the Polish Consulate in Kaliningrad (Kingdom – ed.).
He explained that this decision was the answer to “the last reduction, under absurd pretext, of the Russian diplomatic presence in this country and the withdrawal by Polish authorities of the consent to the functioning of the Polish Consulate General in Krakow”
– We stress again: Russian diplomacy continues to presume that no hostile attack on our country will stay without appropriate consequence and consequences," Klimov said.
He added that the closure of the Russian consulate in Krakow increased the workload of Russian embassy workers in Poland and the consulate in Gdańsk, however, he stressed that they were able to cope with their duties.
Radosław Sikorski withdrew his consent to the Russian consulate in Krakow
As we wrote on Temat.pl, in May the head of the MFA Radosław Sikorski informed: "In connection with the evidence that the Russian peculiar services carried out a shameful act of diversion towards the mall in Marivilska, I decided to retreat my consent to the Russian Federation consulate in Krakow".
In response, Russian MFA spokesperson Maria Zacharova announced retaliation from Moscow. "Warsaw continues to deliberately destruct relations, acting against the interests of citizens," quoted Zacharowa state agency RIA Nowosti.
