He was to be recruited by Sergei Prokopiev, a Russian diplomat expelled from Ireland in 2022** for conducting intelligence activities for the Russian GRU. The Sunday Times reported that after his expulsion he continued to contact an Irish parliamentarian through a Russian agent who was periodically sent to Dublin to establish a romanticist relation with the politician.
