On the night of August 19-20, Russia carried out a massive missile-drone attack on Kiev. According to the city authorities, at least 12 people were killed, more than 30 were injured, homes, school and children's infirmary were damaged. For Poland, it is simply a reminder that the Russian war is inactive beating civilians just outside our borders.
A night attack on the capital
Russia attacked Kiev on the night of 19 to 20 August, utilizing rockets and drones. According to communications from the city authorities, published by Kiev City State AdministrationAt least 12 people died in the capital. Over 30 people were injured. These are the numbers behind which are families, apartments, school and children's hospital.
The top harm was recorded among others in the districts of Słomiańska, Światoszyńska and Darnycka. Housing, medical and educational facilities were damaged. Emergency services were working there. On 21 August, a day of mourning was announced in Kiev, leaving flags on municipal buildings and banning amusement events.
This isn't just a war announcement from a distant front. This is further evidence that the Russian state is besides waged war by attacks on civilian facilities, by fear, electricity cut off from neighborhoods and night alarms. Poland needs to look at this clearly. The NATO border does not nullify Russian brutality, it sets out a place to defend in advance.
Children's infirmary as a sign of this war
Information about a damaged kid infirmary requires peculiar seriousness. There's no area for sensationalism or political act. The basic fact is that the Russian attack touched the infrastructure utilized by children and families. Even if part of the harm was caused by a shock wave or shrapnel, the effect for civilians remains the same: fear, evacuation, discontinued care, damaged sense of security.
Vitali Klipczko informed about the increasing balance of victims this morning. Ukrainian media and Western editorials besides reported that the attack included Kiev and surrounding areas, and the number of victims was updated along with lifeguard work. Security policy does not start with large declarations. It starts with the designation of reality. Russia has not given up force on Ukraine, and the impact on large cities is to break society and force political concessions. Who in Poland pretends that it is possible to keep a comfortable distance, confuses calmness with helplessness.
Polish lesson: anti-aircraft defence and hard realism
For Poland, the most crucial lesson is specific. Air Defense, Ammunition Stocks, Critical Infrastructure, infirmary Protection and Energy Networks are not subjects for reports placed on the shelf. It's a condition of household safety. Ukraine has been seeking further anti-aircraft defence measures for months, and DN described that No missiles to the Patriots can become a test before winter.
Poland has the right to conduct a tough policy towards Kiev, including in historical matters, the rights of Poles and the cost of aid. It's an component of sovereignty. But hardness doesn't mean blind to a threat from the East. Russian aggression requires realism, not sentimentalism and not inexpensive gestures.
Therefore, the answer of the Polish State must be calm but firm: own army, own production, tight defence of the sky, energy resilience and diplomacy conducted from the position of national interest. Compassion for victims in Kiev does not replace strategy. It should sharpen it.
Grief and responsibility
W The Kiev rescuers will proceed to organize debris, safe buildings and look for people who request help. The families of the victims stay empty, which no message can describe. This dimension must be kept at the centre of the text.
The Russian war in Ukraine continues due to the fact that the Kremlin inactive recognises force as a policy tool. The Polish answer must be national in the best sense of the word: based on memory, sobriety and work to defend its own citizens. Civilians are dying outside our east border. For Poles, this is not an abstraction, but a warning.
