After calculating more than 94 percent of the vote, George Simion of the “ultranist” Alliance for the Romanian Union (AUR) won the first circular of presidential elections in Romania, gaining nearly 40 percent of the vote.
With over 3.3 million votes, or nearly 40%, George Simion was ranked first, and another joint candidate for the ruling coalition, Crin Antonescu, with 1.7 million votes, or 20.94 percent, and 3rd with independent candidate Nicușor Dan with 1.6 million votes, or 20.12 percent.
By Mandinera If Crin moves on to the second round, he may have a chance to win in the presidential election, while Nicușor's chances of winning are less.
Simion conquered almost the full of Romania, but the Sheklerland areas, where many cultural Hungarians live. In the districts of Harghita, Mureș, Covasna, Satu Mare and Bihor Crin Antonescu is number one, and Nicușor leads the Cluj-Napoca territory with 95 percent.
The second circular of the Romanian presidential election will be held on 18 May.
The first first circular was cancelled last December by the Romanian Constitutional Court, citing abroad interference and illegal run backing that undermined the integrity of the election and equal opportunities of candidates. This decision has been sharply criticised as anti-democratic.
