Romanian Prime Minister Ion-Marcel Ciolacu announced his resignation on Monday (5 May) and the exit of the Social Democratic organization (PSD) from the government coalition. As a reason for his decision, he states the unsuccessful start of a government candidate in the presidential election. During the conference after the gathering of the leadership of the Ciolacu party, he said: “Instead of waiting for the fresh president to call me off, I decided to leave alone.“.
On Sunday Romania conducted the first circular of repeated presidential elections. George Simion, leader of the nationalist AUR party, and Nicosor Dan, pro-European and independent mayor of Bucharest, qualified for the decisive clash. Favoured by the ruling coalition of Crin Antonescu, he ended his rivalry for Romania's president's seat in 3rd place.
