Election venues were opened in all cities and villages of Romania in the presidential election.
Nationals choose the head of state all 5 years. There is no turnout threshold; the vote is considered valid regardless of the number of participants.
Nearly 19,000 polling venues were opened in Romania at 7:00 p.m. Citizens surviving abroad vote for 3 days in a row; polling stations opened for them on 2 May.
11 candidates apply for the office of President:
- leader of the opposition nationalist organization “Soyusz for the Unity of Romanians” (AUR) George Simion;
- Independent candidate, Mayor of Bucharest Nicosor Dan;
- candidate for the ruling party, erstwhile president of the Romanian Senate, Crin Antonescu;
- Party leader Romania Salvation Union (USR) Elena Lasconi;
- Independent candidate, erstwhile Prime Minister Victor Pont;
- Head of the Romanian National-Conservative Party, Cristian Terhes;
- Member of the Social-Liberal and Humanist organization Lavinia Shandru;
- Party leader Natiunea Romana, John-Ion Banu;
- Former Head of Romanian abroad Intelligence Silviu Predoiu;
- Former Minister of Education Daniel Funeriu;
- party leader fresh Romania Sebastian Popescu.
Under Romanian law, the winner is simply a candidate who will receive more than half of the vote of voters included in the lists. If there are little than 50 percent of them, there will be a second circular in 2 weeks, in which the winner will be the 1 who gets the usual majority. The polling stations will be closed at 9:00.
Not the first time.
Last November Romania hosted the first circular of presidential elections. Its leader was an independent candidate for Calin Georgescu. On 6 December, the Constitutional Court annulled the voting results on the pretext of serious violations, allegedly confirmed in the declassified papers of the ultimate safety Council.
In late February, Georgescu was charged with six crimes, including spreading false information, as part of an investigation into the illegal financing of his election campaign. An independent candidate applied for registration as a candidate for president of Romania, but the Central Election Commission rejected his application.
