The reflection of Roman Dmowski from 1925, erstwhile in 1 of the articles he wondered what actions he would take if he wanted to harm Poland and at the same time as the enemies of independent Poland think – what steps they take to weaken the country, divide the nation and divert its attention towards tiny issues – so that he would argue about trivial matters without paying attention to what is important.

The observant reader will besides see quite a few analogies to the current situation of the Polish state.

"There are 2 species of people who, with a bed of delightful dreams, do not want to part. any have always stood apart from life, from its needs and necessity, for them knowing reality has always been inaccessible, before the large war and during this war they have acted as unconscious, drunk with hashish various fictions about the world, about their own country and about themselves.

Others feel powerfully today's reality, the hardness of the bed on which they have rested, is hard on them, but they are disgusted by the thought of long efforts and sacrifices for gradual repair.

These comfort themselves that individual is laying a bed for them, that a dictator or a king will do the work for them, and let them rest. The last is frequently people not only of the best intentions, but available for logic. That is why I would like to talk to them here too.”
"I find it very useful to think from time to time about what I would do if I were an enemy of Poland, if I were uncomfortable to rebuild Poland and if I meant to destruct it.

First of all, I would usage all effort and I would not regret any sacrifices to prevent the regulation of common sense in this country, so that the behaviour of Poles does not begin to direct a sober assessment of relations and the location of their country.

I would keep in Poland at my expense legions of people whose business would be to spread confusion of concepts, to run the most varied lies, to bring out the most crazy ideas.

Whenever I noticed that Poles were beginning to see clearly their position and to get on the road to the repair of relations and to the strengthening of the state, I would immediately do anything to distract them in the another direction, bring out any fresh ideas, fresh plans, make a fresh movement in which a healthy thought would drown.

At the minute I would be greatly afraid that in Polish politics the taxation and economical issues prevailed, that Poles are truly beginning to realize that they have so far gone to financial and economical ruin, and thus to lose independence, that they are beginning to see errors in the way they have ruled, openly and boldly admit these mistakes, want to shake them up and uncover a clear will in this direction.

I would consider it a very unfavorable fact that after the resignation of the Grabski Sejm, it was hard to establish a coalition government in which the parties, very far from each another in their programmes, decided to cooperate in bringing the state budget to a balance and in saving the country from falling into the last misery. And I would not be pleased that the fresh treasure minister has gone so far in his openness, revealing the state's dangerous position and pointing out the request to reduce its gross by specified a immense amount.

I would feel that I have the biggest disappointment, namely that I am disappointed in the Sejm, which I hoped for with certainty, that I would never let the state economy to be healed, that all effort in this direction would destroy. And I would start to fear that these weak beginnings will not make into something stronger, or that these symptoms of sobering up, the advancement of concepts and the sense of work for the destiny of the country will not become clearer, and that Poland is not actually starting to enter the way of repair.

I would consider this all the more undesirable, that the financial and economical state of European countries is at present failing at all, that governments and parliaments are increasingly little able to remedy the evil, and that, if Poland had made an effort and its economy so orderly, it could have established its position in Europe and even made it strong at all.

I would have decided to prevent it at any cost. But how?
First of all, I would make my means and by my agents agitation in Poland, distracting the public from economical and fiscal matters.

It is not the misfortune of Poland that it does not produce enough, and it consumes besides much, that the state's treasure has besides small income – and it cannot have more, due to the fact that from a mediocre society it will no longer compression out – and for large expenses, that besides the national of the country, and the state itself is being bullied by evil speculation...

Today the main misfortune is the mediocre political strategy of the state. This strategy needs to be changed first. Drop everything and take care of it.

And here I would radically change my position: erstwhile I utilized to be in favour of Poland having the most democratic constitution in Europe, erstwhile I tried to have the power of the Sejm in it, which I expected would never let a government to be established, guided by common sense, leading a sensible state economy – today, seeing in this Parliament the first symptoms, proving that people have learned something, that they are beginning to realize the position of the country, with a hard reality, that they are beginning to shyly enter the way on which only a permanent basis of state existence can be created, today, I say, would become an absolute opponent of the democratic constitution, the Sejm, present I would begin to proclaim the request for a coup d'tat, dictatorship, or even an autocratic monarchy.

And if I could inactive find what kind of militarist dreaming of war deeds and waiting for the chance to put Poland in any kind of trouble, e.g. in the war with the Soviets, I would shower it with gold – if I had it – and by all means I would aid it to guide Polish politics according to my will.

Then I'd be certain you'd be okay. For all of this, if I were an enemy of Poland, I would not regret efforts or victims.
True, Polish enemies, closer and distant, have so much problem at their home today, these problems grow so overnight, the gold that they inactive possess, melts so rapidly that besides many thoughts cannot be sacrificed by Poland and cannot be made besides large sacrifices to bring it to its final destruction.

Fortunately for them there are many people in Poland who effort to do their occupation for them. It happens sometimes in life that any mediocre man, having nothing and struggling hard against the hard conditions of being, at the same time, unexpectedly gets a large inheritance.

But that he has never seen more money, he has not operated more in the face of this property which he has fallen without any effort, he is dizzy, he seems to be something infinite, inexhaustible.

He starts utilizing this property: he lives like a dream, throws money to the right and left, no plan, no sense, no bill. The wealth is distracted in a fewer years and the poorness begins to come back. It's just harder now, 'cause it's got plenty.

Such a mediocre man, who unexpectedly got a large inheritance, is the current Polish generation, the decrease is united independent Poland. No wonder that the generation that received it – due to the fact that it did not gain it with its own efforts – suffered dizziness. People here began to live, like in a dream, closed their eyes to the surrounding reality.

Their own state, which they possessed, treated only as a origin of all the delights: easy profiting, satisfying the most exuberant ambitions, bathing in dignity and honors, frequently ridiculous representations, enjoying celebrations, celebrations...

They did not realize that this large inheritance entailed large responsibilities. And within 7 years, they were able to squander much of their inheritance.
To any extent, this was inevitable. It was not possible to request specified a miracle from the Lord God that a generation which had nothing and had nothing to rule, would send down from heaven the gift of the intelligent to regulation the large state at once, and even that it would save them from the dizzyness of specified a abrupt change of fate.

But this dizziness, this dream life lasted a long time. For respective years, attempts have begun to awaken society from this dangerous dream, to bring him back to consciousness. These trials were unsuccessful. They only began to wake up erstwhile they felt bad reality.

It's a delightful bed where they dreamt of power, honors, fortunes, etc., it's starting to get harder and harder, falling aside doesn't help. And now the awakening begins, people begin to think and act consciously. They begin to realize that to live on, to exist, it takes a great, constant effort."
