In the 3rd year of the full-size invasion of the Kremlin into Ukraine, the European Union spent more money on Russian fuel than on financial assistance given to Kiev, as reported by the Centre for Energy and Clean Air investigation (CREA), as quoted by the British paper Guardian.

The EU is estimated to have bought oil and gas worth EUR 22 billion from Russia in 2024 and contributed EUR 19 billion to the financial support of Ukraine, according to the figures of the CREA and the Kilonian Institute of planet Economy (IfW Kiel). This data does not include EU military or humanitarian assistance to Kiev, but only financial support.

Christoph Trebesch, an economist from IfW Kiel, noted that European donors spend little than 0.1% of GDP on average in financial assistance to Ukraine.

According to the CREA report, Russia besides earned EUR 242 billion in its 3rd year of invasion of Ukraine on exports of fossil fuels.

As stressed, Moscow derives even half of its taxation revenues from the oil and gas sector and seeks to circumvent western sanctions by transporting fuel through the alleged shadow fleet. According to CREA, these vessels are liable for the carriage of goods with a value corresponding to about 1 3rd of the export gross from fossil fuels.
