Notice made by an accidental witness
The investigation was initiated by the intervention of an accidental witness who, he claims, found himself at Braun's rally by accident and heard offensive words to president Andrzej Duda. According to his account, Grzegorz Braun was to call the head of state "a traitor and a patented fool."
The witness reported this to police officers present on the scene, who – as D.A. Marcin Stelmach, head of the Lublin South territory Attorney's Office confirmed – transported the applicant to the City Police office in Lublin, where an authoritative notification about the anticipation of committing a crime was submitted.

Grzegorz Braun is known for his sharp and controversial public appearances, both in and outside the Sejm. He was frequently punished by law for his behaviour in parliament. This time, however, the case may enter a much more serious level, as it concerns a possible crime connected with the office of the president of Poland – which, according to Polish law, is subject to peculiar protection.
Article 135(2) of the Criminal Code is 1 of the tools for protecting the dignity of the presidential office, regardless of the individual holding that office. Both intentions and the context of the statements will be crucial in further proceedings – the prosecution will gotta measure whether the words have fallen within acceptable political criticism or whether they have been abusive.
Possible consequences for Grzegorz Braun
If the proceedings end with charges, Grzegorz Braun may stand trial and a possible conviction would have a crucial impact on his further political career. Although politicians frequently mention freedom of speech, the limits of this freedom in the context of insulting state bodies are clearly defined in the legislation.
