In Brussels, the defence ministers of the ‘coalitions of willing’ states discussed safety guarantees for Ukraine on Thursday and the format of the ‘reinsurance forces’ to be sent to the country after the ceasefire in the defence war with Russia, stated the AFP. The Agency notes that “many questions stay unanswered”.
This was the first gathering of defence ministers within this coalition under the auspices of France and the UK, which consists of about 30 countries.
The first warrant of safety is, of course, support for the Ukrainian army, that is, refusal to demilitarize Ukraine, as Russia would have liked.
“the French defence minister Sebastien Lecornu told journalists after the gathering ended.
He added that the coalition is not about creating "peace forces that would separate the 2 sides of the conflict along the front lines".
The AFP points out that neither Lecorn nor his British counterpart John Healey specified how large the ‘reinsurance forces’ would be, nor what troops would be included in this quota.
The intent of the coalition talks is now to specify "what a possible mission (military) would look like, what is its purpose, what is its mandate, what we can do in different scenarios," explained Dutch defence minister Ruben Brekelmans.
Healey announced that the mission would have 4 objectives:
First, warrant safety in the air. Secondly, warrant safety at sea. Thirdly, support peace on earth and fourthly, aid the Ukrainian army to become its strongest deterrent force."
However, many representatives of the countries represented in Brussels on Thursday pointed to the deficiency of a "reliable" force to deter unsupported Europeans.

French president Emmanuel Macron reported in late March that a French-British mission would go to Ukraine to prepare a future Ukrainian army format in the event of a possible deployment of global forces in Ukraine, in the event of a truce between Kiev and Moscow. This is what the French president called the global contingent to hit Ukraine with "reinsurance forces".
However, Macron had already stated that it would not have been a peaceful contingent, present on the line of demarcation of the fighting parties, or "forces replacing the Ukrainian army", but forces that would have demonstrated long-term support and "have the character of deterring possible Russian aggression".
