Religious lessons in schools. More than half of Poles support this demand

The latest survey shows that more than half of those surveyed want to limit spiritual lessons to 1 hour. This request is powerfully supported by women alternatively than men.


The number of hours of spiritual lessons in schools for respective months has been a bone of disagreement between the Episcopate, the Ministry of National Education and the Constitutional Court. Meanwhile, Opin24 studio asked Polish women and Poles about their opinion on the subject.

Support for 1 spiritual lesson in schools

"The number of spiritual lessons in schools should decrease to 1 hr a week" – this message was supported by 54 percent (35 percent "agreementally agrees" and 19 percent "preferably agreed").

28% of respondents were opposed, while 18 did not have an opinion. "This post is more frequently powerfully supported by women – 39 percent, people aged 50-59 – 45 percent, people with higher education – 42 percent, and voters of the Civic Coalition – 67 percent," the results read.

Conflict between MEN and TK

Let us remind: On 3 July, the Constitutional Tribunal of Bogdan Święczkowski, Krystyna Pawłowicz, Stanisław Piotrowicz concluded that the MEN Regulation of 17 January 2025, which reduces the number of school catechesis from 2 lesson hours a week to 1 (and this only on the first or last lesson) is unconstitutional. As a reason, it was stated that the regulation was taken without agreement with the Church and that the position of the Episcopal was not taken into account.

– This is an effort to destabilise the education system, where a group pretending to be a tribunal, along with bishops, undermines the government's action. They forget that they are not in charge of the state and cannot accept that we are acting in accordance with the law and what we have promised our voters. The election was won by the coalition on October 15, not bishops. And there is simply a school for bishops, only for children and young people – she responded to the position of TK Barbara Nowacka.

– I will stress, there were attempts to communicate with bishops, but they vetoed. And their responsibility is that no compromise has occurred," she said. – The regulation will apply, we from the state budget will pay 1 lesson of religion.
