The result of the war in Ukraine will decide the destiny of NATO – believes candidate for head of the German MFA Johann Wadephul. The anticipation that Russia wants to regain its hegemony throughout Central and east Europe should be taken seriously.

"(In Ukraine) is about the destiny of all of us. This is not about a fewer square kilometers, but about the fundamental question of whether we will let a classical war that results in conquest. If we let it, trust that we are ready to defend our freedom will be questioned. It will besides be uncertain that we are ready for solidarity in NATO," Wadephul said in an interview published on Friday in the paper portal "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" (FAZ).

"He who avoids the war in Ukraine, he exposes himself to suspicion that he will besides avoid in another places" – warned the CDU politician considered to be a candidate for the position of abroad Minister in the cabinet of Chancellor Friedrich Merza.

Does Putin want to dominate Central and east Europe?

Wadephul said that the anticipation that Putin is aiming to regain hegemony over Central and east Europe should be taken seriously. He recalled the words of the president of Russia that the dissolution of the USSR was "the top catastrophe of the twentieth century". Whoever interferes in the affairs of Moldova, Georgia, Ukraine and attacks NATO hybridly, it can be said that he intends to get hegemony in Central and east Europe.

The CDU politician pointed out that Germany should "at least" participate in the improvement of a plan of "a coalition of willing" providing for the control of the truce in Ukraine. "The decisions on specifics will come later," he added.

According to Wadephul, America, despite changing course under Trump, is not a rival of Europe due to the fact that it continues to support NATO. However, certain behaviors are not consistent with principles that should apply to allies and friends. The protection of Europe is in line with the fundamental interest of the US. "America will yet realize that the conflict with China and their ally Russia can only win along with Europe," he stressed.

Ukraine's way to NATO "irreversible"

He felt it essential to discuss a European strategy for atomic deterrence. France's concept of a "syphernical Europe" makes sense, due to the fact that in many areas there has been a distance between Europe and America.

When asked about Ukraine's position towards NATO membership, Wadephul replied, "We should keep the position that Ukraine is on an irreversible way towards NATO. Among the countries of the Alliance in the South West of Europe there is abstinence in this matter, and America is powerfully against it. Therefore, I would not urge raising this issue as a central point at the nearest NATO summit."

"We should (Ukraine) deliver everything we need," said chadek. As he pointed out, circumstantial decisions should be made by the military.

Coalition CDU/CSU/SPD government Merza is due to emergence in early May. The most likely date of Merz's swearing-in as Chancellor is May 6. The list of ministers is not yet known. Wadephul is designated head of the MFA.
