“Hannibal!” – Agrifu workers protest against dismissals
A protest by trade unionists was held in front of the office of the Agrif plant, belonging to Animex Foods, in consequence to the dismissals of 24 ham-cutting workers. As reported ‘Gazeta Wyborcza’, demonstrators objected to replacing staff with temporary agency staff.
– Jurek worked in Agrifa for 42 years. Grześiu has survived his release so that his wellness has gone bad, he is being treated – said Dariusz Głogowski, president during the demonstration ‘Solidarity’ Agrifa. – He cannot accept what happens to him after working for decades.
The assembled chanted “Humble!”, stressing the importance of experience and loyalty of employees. – I've been at the firm for 18 years. I'm afraid that in my department, staff members can be replaced by agencies, too. said Alice, 1 of the protesters.
"Not against people but against the form of employment"
Trade unions point out that the opposition concerns not the nationality of workers, but the form of their employment. – We have nothing against workers from Asia or Ukraine, but let them be hired on a stage, not cheaper, by agencies. These people work 12–14 hours, it's not safe. “Głogowski added.
According to union representatives, Agrif shows no losses, and employment fell from 1,200 people 2 years ago to 900 today. Currently, there are besides about 100 people employed by employment agencies.
Animex Foods Response: ‘Restructuring for profitability’
The media questions were answered by Łukasz Dominik from the board of Animex Foods. – The ham punching department was not viable, hence restructuring operations He explained. – Importantly, we carry out these activities in dialog with employees.
When asked for further exemptions, Dominic said: – We're in the process of restructuring. Our aim is to defend jobs and at the same time adapt the plant to marketplace requirements.
