On 1 March 1951, leaders of the 4th Board of the Main Association of Freedom and independency (WiN) were shot in a prison in Mokotów, Warsaw, at Rakowiecka Street, after the show trial. Among the victims were the president of WiN Łukasz Cieplinski nicknamed “Plug”, “Ludwik” and his closest colleagues: Colonel Adam Lazarowicz, Colonel Mieczysław Kawalec, Major Józef Rzepka, Major Franciszek Błażej, Major Józef Batory and Captain Karol Chmiel.

In 2011, at the initiative of president Lech Kaczyński, the Sejm of the Republic of Poland established on 1 March the National Day of Memory of the Cursed Soldiers.

– The Cursed Soldiers have testified to their lives of large value of freedom, independence, fact and good – they are present large winners. Through the evidence of their lives they are truly immortal," said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki during the celebration of the National Day of Memory of the Cursed Soldiers.

Maintaining fact and Memory

The soldiers of the Cursed are heroes of the anti-communist underground, who in defence of Poland's independency fought for the right to self-determination and to realise the aspirations of democratic Polish society. They opposed russian aggression and the force imposed on the communist government so that we could now live in a free and independent country. The name “Cursed Soldiers” comes from the early 1990s. They were cursed due to the fact that for decades of communism they were to be erased from the pages of past and forgotten.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki during the ceremony at the Museum of Cursed Soldiers and Political Prisoners of the Polish People's Republic in Warsaw stressed the importance of cultivating the fact about events and heroes of post-war Poland. The head of the Polish government thanked all those who for hard years after 1989 not only kept memory, but tried to rebuild the fact about the Cursed Soldiers.

– Let us remember that not only was it not always so, and I mean here not only years after planet War II, but besides the 1990s and 2000s. There were generations of steadfast Poles who fought for the memory of the Cursed Soldiers, and thank you very much for that – thank you to the head of the Polish government.
