U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National safety Advisor Mike Waltz and peculiar Envoy to the mediate East Steve Witkoff will go to Saudi Arabia in the coming days for talks with Russian envoys about the end of the war in Ukraine," reported American Congressman Michael McCaul in Munich.
McCaul clarified that the first subject of the talks would, however, be to prepare a gathering of the Presidents of the United States, Ukraine and Russia "to yet bring peace and end this conflict". Reuter points out that it is unclear who will represent the Russian side in preliminary talks.
The message was confirmed by the information sources Reuter cites. The State Department has not responded to this information so far.
‘Europe will not be at the table"
On the another hand, the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenski previously stated that Ukraine had not yet been invited and that Kiev would not start talks with Russia until it consulted "strategic partners". At the same time, however, he announced that he would make visits to the United arabian Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, but did not specify when.
Earlier on Saturday, the Russian MFA reported that Rubio had spoken to his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrow and both decided to keep regular contacts before Trump-Putin talks.
Trump, who spoke by telephone with Putin and Zelenski on Wednesday, repeatedly announced that it would lead to a fast end to the war in Ukraine. These talks, as Reuter points out, alerted European allies of Washington to be excluded from any possible peace process.
These concerns were confirmed on Saturday by U.S. peculiar Envoy for Ukraine and Russia General Keith Kellogg declaring in Munich that "Europe will not be straight at the negotiating table for the end of the war in Ukraine due to the fact that we do not want a repeat from Minsk".
