According to the American Geological Service, the massive earthquake that struck the east coast of Kamchatka in the Far East of Russia had a magnitude of 8.7. According to Russian services, this was the strongest earthquake since 1952, and according to the U.S. Time magazine portal, the sixth strongest of those registered. The shocks were shallow and strong adequate to trigger tsunami waves in the Pacific.
