Estonia has decided to end talks with Russia about the navigation buoy on the Narva River, as despite attempts to scope an agreement on the location of the buoy, they have not been successful.

Early in the morning of 23 May 2024, the Russian border defender unilaterally removed 25 buoys from the Narva River, which Estonia had installed to simplify navigation. Kerli Veski, a Deputy Secretary-General for Legal and Consular Affairs at the Estonian Ministry of abroad Affairs, said that Estonia has been trying to scope an agreement with Russia in various ways on an incidental with navigational buoys, but without success.

"Russia has not agreed to jointly measurement the riverbed to explain the location of the water track, and thus the control line, nor has it given us an answer where they differ," the diplomat said. "This spring we made a fresh proposal for an agreement on the location of buoys during the navigation period, but this besides did not lead to a constructive outcome. That is why we decided to end talks with Russia about the navigation buoy due to the fact that they are pointless," she added.

"The temporary control line between Estonia and Russia, which is besides the control line of NATO and the European Union, remains in place and there will be no change here," stressed Veski, while stating that specified non-constructive actions are typical Russian tactics. “Estonia will not be discouraged by this. We will proceed to work closely with our allies and partners to guarantee the safety of our country as well as of Europe."
