Pope Francis' attitude towards the war in Ukraine is causing considerable controversy. all now and then, the media reports scandalous words or decisions of the head of the Catholic Church. On the 1 hand, the Pope speaks about the suffering of the Ukrainian people and calls for prayer, and on the another hand tries to defend the aggressor. It seems that Francis simply does not want to let the fact about bloody Russian imperialism come to pass.

There are many good things to say about Pope Francis. During his pontificate, he raised the subjects which in the Church were pushed to the background. He said
about respect for LGBTQ+ people, ecology or the return of Catholic priests to the essence of Jesus' teaching. So it seemed that there was a individual in the capital of Peter who understood the problems of the present world. But the spell broke erstwhile Russia attacked Ukraine. The war behind our east border has shown that the Pope does not understand, or possibly does not want to realize that the real victim of the war is Ukraine and not Russia.

Forced Reconciliation

In the beginning there were only words about the suffering of the Ukrainian people and calling for peace. For a long time, the Pope did not mention an aggressor once, as if an indication of the guilty individual was impossible. alternatively of condemning Russia, there were requests for reconciliation and forgiveness from the Ukrainian side. The carrying of the cross together by Ukraine and Russia during the cross road last April was to become a symbol of this. The Ukrainian side powerfully opposed this idea, indicating that there was no forgiveness until Russia left Ukraine. In the end, however, the apostolic capital did not quit this concept entirely. Under pressure, only the content of the deliberations was changed.

This full situation resembles images from school, erstwhile the teacher says, “I don’t care who started, you should apologize.” At this point, it doesn't substance who the victim is or who the perpetrator is. They are equal. However, it seems that the tormentor actually wins due to the fact that he bears no consequences. The victim must be humiliated at this point before his torturer. She's not guilty, and an apology is forced on her. It seems that Pope Francis does not read the call to forgiveness in this way. But there is no another way. The victim was just compared to the aggressor.

Defender

Pope Francis did not halt there. His next words are 1 step further. He's making a full-fledged victim of the torturer. A final example of this approach is the interview given to “Corriere della Sera” in May 2022. Pope Francis speaks, among another things, of the fact that “the barking of NATO at the door of Russia” may have led to a war in Ukraine. These words raised much controversy, and nothing unusual about it, due to the fact that the Pope, wishing not to duplicate Russian propaganda. Francis said that Russia was provoked, so her conduct is justified. The United States, NATO associate States and Ukraine themselves, who have aspirations to join the alliance, are liable for the situation. The Pope explained this message by saying that these words fell from the mouth of the wise leader of the state during their talks even before the outbreak of the war. The interviewer was about to say that he was afraid about NATO's movements. To the question of the pope why he thinks so, he would answer "They bark at the door of Russia and do not realize that the Russians are imperial and do not let any abroad force to approach them." The leader mentioned by the pope actually points out that NATO provokes Russia, while besides highlighting the strong imperialism of the Russians, which is the real origin of the war. However, it cannot be seen that this argument brings to head comments about rape victims, who, according to many, provoked the perpetrators, for example, by walking through the city at night alone. Pope Francis, speaking these words in an interview, acted like all those who insolently justify criminals.

But the head of the Church did not halt there. After the death of Daria Dugina, the daughter of the prokremlian ideologist, again came out of his mouth words that are simply outrageous. The Pope considered Russian propaganda, which openly supported Russian aggression, to be a mediocre and innocent victim of the war in Ukraine. In November, during a press conference, he said that he was struck by the cruelty of the war, which is why he constantly talks about the tormented Ukraine. However, he continues to point out that it is not the Russian people who wage war, but soldiers and tenants. He besides mentions that he respects the Russian people and the works of Dostoevsky. The Pope so rejects the thought that many Russians support the war, and Russian men are straight active in the execution of civilians.

The Argentine position

This favour of the head of the Church towards Russia is devastating. It seems that Francis does not truly know what the thought of Russian miru is. He acts like he's trying to reconcile his bickering siblings. The Pope frequently talked about the fact that he had respective contacts with the president of Ukraine, but besides spoke with the Russian ambassador to the apostolic capital. However, he points out that the intent of the talks with the Russian diplomat is to find the right solution to this situation. At the conference in early February he expressed his willingness to meet Zelenski and Putin. He besides stressed that he did not come to Ukraine, just due to the fact that it was impossible to travel to Moscow.

This Pope's attitude is incomprehensible and not unambiguous. On the 1 hand, he prays for peace in Ukraine, and on the another hand shows knowing for Russian imperialism. He does not explicitly condemn Russia, but speaks of forgiveness from the Ukrainian side. In his eyes the Russian people are humanitarian and not guilty of the atrocities of war. So it seems that the Pope is blind to what is actually happening in Ukraine. possibly he doesn't want to change his image of the planet he's been building until then. Tomasz Terlikowski, a Catholic activist and journalist, frequently pointed out that Francis' origin could have a real impact on his knowing of the war in Ukraine. The Pope, being Argentine, looks at the full situation from the position of Latin American countries. In that region, the United States is frequently the bad hero. That is why his statements show a deficiency of assurance in US politics and even criticism of the country's leaders. Russia, in turn, is simply a silent hero in Argentina due to the fact that it has no crucial influence in that region.

But does this justify the Pope’s outrageous attitude toward war? Not really. The Pope does not want to change his thinking, does not want to know the position of the countries of Central Europe and does not want to let himself to think that Russian imperialism is implemented by ruthless methods. But until his way of looking at this peculiar war changes, his attitude will proceed to be the same. Pope Francis will origin controversy with his words and actions.
