Statement by the Prime Minister
According to the Times of Israel portal, Ambassador Maciej Hunia was summoned to authoritative diplomatic intervention by the head of the political and strategical department of the Israeli MFA. The reason was Donald Tusk's Sunday speeches published on the X platform. The Prime Minister wrote there:
Poland was, is and will be on the side of Israel in its confrontation with muslim terrorism, but never on the side of politicians whose actions lead to hunger and death of mothers and children. It must be apparent to the nations that went through the hell of planet War II together.
Israeli diplomats powerfully criticized the speech of the Prime Minister of Poland, recognizing it as a manifestation of manipulation of past and insult to the memory of Holocaust victims. Their message underlines that Israel is carrying out armed actions against Hamas, a terrorist organization that openly seeks to destruct Israel and kill Jews. At the same time, it was noted that these actions are carried out in accordance with global law and that the Israeli State is expanding its efforts to supply humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, including in cooperation with the European Union.
Right to defence
In consequence to the situation, the Polish Ministry of abroad Affairs published its own position on Monday. It explicitly emphasises that it recognises Israel's right of defence, but at the same time it objects to the scale of civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip resulting from the Hamas operations.
The activities of Israeli diplomacy were besides addressed by government spokesperson Adam Szpiek during a press conference following a Council of Ministers meeting. He stressed that the Polish government is leading and shaping the country's abroad policy, stressing that it is not Poland that is presently in global isolation.
Conflict in Gaza
The armed conflict in the Gaza Strip began on October 7, 2023, erstwhile Hamas, who held power in the area, carried out an attack on confederate Israel, resulting in the deaths of about 1,200 people. In consequence to this attack, Israel began a military operation in which over 61,000 Palestinians have been killed so far.
International criticism of Israeli actions in the region has late intensified, where the increasing humanitarian crisis is becoming increasingly dramatic. Humanitarian organisations are informing that a large part of the population is suffering from food shortages and humanitarian aid reaching Gaza is insufficient. According to local medical services, only in the last 24 hours due to hunger and malnutrition, 8 people died, and since the beginning of the war, a full of 188, including 94 children.
