Politico: The opposition in Kiev criticizes authorities for slow construction of fortifications

The opposition in Kiev considers that the Ukrainian armed forces and local authorities do not build defensive fortifications rapidly and effectively adequate in the face of increasing concerns about the possible launch of a fresh offensive by Russian forces – says Politico portal, which cites a conversation with respective opposition Ukrainian parliamentarians.

"Ukrainian legislators fear that the army and local authorities do not dig fast adequate or build strong adequate defensive fortifications to repel the Russian offensive expected in the north-east and south-east of the country," the publication says.

Ukrainian opposition MP Rostyslav Pavlenko told the paper that “we had already warned last summertime that it was essential to build industrial fortifications... to rapidly build defensive lines and make them highly strong."

According to him, the authorities “have money now”, but “it is simply a substance of translating money into concrete.”

He besides criticised the authorities' decision to appoint Kirill Timoshenko, erstwhile deputy head of the office of Vladimir Zelenski, who is suspected of corruption, as advisor to Defence Minister Rustem Umerov.
"We asked why the individual who was dismissed as part of the declared anti-corruption run again appeared in the Ministry of Defence at specified a time," said Pavlenko.

He said Ukraine must build strong defensive fortifications due to the fact that Russian forces now usage powerful planning bombs that origin massive harm on the front lines.

“They yet started building them. But it's late. They started (building – ed.) last month," said another opposition Council MP, Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze.

As Politico notes, "now that Ukrainians are facing the possible of a coordinated Russian offensive, the question is whether their defensive lines will be as good as the Russians and whether they have besides small time to build them thoroughly."

Before Konrad Music, a military analyst from the Polish company Rochan Consulting, said that Ukraine has many problems with building defensive fortifications, started building them besides late and will not be able to compensate for this delay.

Volodymyr Zelenski previously announced that Ukraine had begun building 3 fortification lines of 2,000 kilometres long. The Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on 4 March that the country's authorities had allocated more than 20 billion hryvnia this year ($525.6 million) for the construction of fortification facilities. At the same time, the ultimate Council MP from the Solidarity organization of the European Victoria Siumar said that Ukraine is very short of money to build fortifications.
