On 10 May a historical gathering was held in Kiev with the participation of European leaders, including Donald Tusk. Together with the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenski conducted a telephone conversation with the president of the United States, Donald Trump. 1 of the main topics of the talks was the anticipation of announcing a 30-day truce between Russia and Ukraine.
Shortly after the meeting, at which the leaders threatened the Kremlin with fresh sanctions, Zelenski confirmed Kiev's readiness to conclude a ceasefire which would start on Monday 12 May. Vladimir Putin did not declare specified a desire, but proposed that representatives of Russia and Ukraine meet on 15 May in Istanbul to begin peace talks.
However, European allies of Ukraine, including the Polish Prime Minister or French president Emmanuel Macro, stressed that negotiations should only begin after the ceasefire.
"The planet is waiting for a clear decision on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire," wrote Donald Tusk on X, in turn the president of France stated: president Zelenski committed to this without any conditions. Now we anticipate an equally unambiguous consequence from Russia".
Trump calls on Ukraine to talk to Russia in Istanbul: "Do it now!"
In another tone, however, Donald Trump sounds. "Russian president Vladimir Putin... does not want to enter into a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine, but wishes to meet in Turkey on Thursday to negociate a possible end to this bloodbath. Ukraine should agree immediately" – wrote the president of the United States on his platform fact Social, on which he had previously written about "a possibly large day for Russia and Ukraine".
As Trump stressed, "at least it will be possible to find whether an agreement is possible and, if not, European leaders and the US will know where they stand and can act accordingly."
"I begin to uncertainty that Ukraine will enter into an agreement with Putin, who is besides busy celebrating a triumph in planet War II, which would not be possible (not a bit!) without the United States. Organize this gathering now!" the American president appealed.
Trump's support for the proposed talks in Istanbul is so different from that of another Western leaders to Vladimir Putin's invitation. Let us add that the deficiency of a peace agreement with Ukraine is expected to – according to media reports – frustrate Trump, who, before the elections, regretfully declared that he "will end" the war within 24 hours.
– He is undoubtedly frustrated and impatient that something that would take a while is dragging. However, we can inactive see that Vladimir Putin is doing what he likes – he commented in an interview with Marcin Wrona, a correspondent for TVN in the US.
Let us remind that Ukraine has already accepted the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire on 11 March, declaring its readiness to implement it if Russia besides agrees to these conditions. So far, Moscow has refused.
