The slide is simply a tiny part of the map, which in fresh days has grown to 1 of the most crucial safety points of Europe. This narrow strip of land on the border of Poland and Lithuania, located between the royal circuit and Belarus, is sometimes referred to as the "fifth Achilles of NATO".
It is here that the interests of the West and Russia cross, and the defence experts inform that in the event of a possible conflict, the region could become the arena of the first clashes. Why is this seemingly peaceful corner so strategic, and what are the dangers of its location?
Where precisely is the slide, and why is it important?
Sludge is an area about 104 km long, located in north-eastern Poland, in the area of Suwałk and Augustów. This is where the only land corridor leads. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia with the remainder of the NATO alliance. On the 1 hand, it borders the Russian royal circuit, a heavy militarized region with military bases and rocket systems. On the another hand, it is neighbouring Belarus, which is now the ally of Moscow.

For Baltic states, the pass is the only way to send military and logistical support from Poland and Western Europe quickly. If this narrow land strip had been cut off, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia would have been in (theoretic) insulation. This is the main reason why it is identified as 1 of the most dangerous places on the map of possible conflict.
Experts, specified as erstwhile British intelligence officer Philip Ingram, emphasize that limited number of roads and bridges makes it adequate for a tiny military operation to paralyze communications in this area.
Is there a real threat?
Russia and Belarus regularly run close military exercises (as of 12 September, another 1 is held, under the name Zapad 2025). The scenarios analysed by NATO include:
- quick business of the pass
- the merger of the armies of the royal region and Belarus
- hybrid actions specified as cyber attacks, misinformation or the usage of peculiar troops to sabotage vital infrastructure

To strengthen security, the alliance increased military presence on the east flank of the country. In Poland and the Baltic countries there are rotational branches (mostly American) that practice joint actions. In addition, NATO implemented air surveillance over Poland: Dutch and Norwegian F-35 fighters are ready to respond in 24/7 mode.
