DELHI— A SpiceJet (SG) flight scheduled to operate between Delhi (DEL) and Mumbai (BOM) was delayed for nearly seven hours after two passengers attempted to enter the cockpit before takeoff. The incident occurred on Flight SG9282 at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
This resulted in the aircraft being brought back to the gate and the passengers being offloaded by security personnel.

SpiceJet Cockpit Breach Attempt
The disturbance began shortly after the aircraft began taxiing for departure around 12:30 PM. Two passengers on board expressed dissatisfaction over the air-conditioning and refused to follow the crew’s instructions.
Despite repeated warnings from the cabin crew and intervention by fellow passengers, they attempted to move toward the front of the aircraft, ignoring all directions to remain seated.
The captain decided to return the aircraft to the parking bay in accordance with standard procedures. Flight data from Flightradar24 shows that the aircraft remained grounded until 7:21 PM, when it finally departed for Mumbai.
Once the aircraft was back at the terminal, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was called in. The two individuals involved were removed from the flight and handed over to the authorities for further questioning. Their identities have not been released.
Access to the cockpit without authorization is a serious violation under civil aviation regulations. Even an attempt to approach the cockpit can result in detainment and criminal proceedings under relevant security and safety laws.

Chaos For Other Travellers
Passengers who were on board confirmed that the other two travelers were repeatedly asked to cooperate, but they continued to act in a disruptive manner.
Cabin crew members followed protocol, and the situation was escalated only after efforts to de-escalate failed. However, other passengers had to suffer throughout the delay.
SpiceJet confirmed the timeline and nature of the incident in a public statement. The airline stated that the passengers were removed for non-compliance and that flight safety procedures were followed throughout.
There has been no formal comment from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) regarding this incident. However, such cases are usually reviewed internally. Airlines are required to file detailed incident reports with the regulator, and follow-up action, if any, is determined based on the findings.
The CISF is currently handling the investigation, and any legal proceedings will be initiated based on their report.
Legal Consequences for Such Breach
Under Indian aviation law, attempting to enter the cockpit without authorization is considered a serious offense. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) classifies such behavior as Level 3 unruly conduct, which involves actions that physically endanger the safety of flight operations.
As per DGCA guidelines, passengers found guilty of Level 3 offenses can face a flying ban of up to two years, in addition to legal proceedings under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Aircraft Act. The DGCA also mandates that all incidents of this nature be reviewed by an internal airline committee.
The committee can recommend inclusion of the passenger on India’s No-Fly List after the review. Offenders may also be charged under IPC Sections related to endangering life or safety, criminal trespass, and disobedience to lawful authority.

Flight Completed Without Further Issues
After the two passengers were removed and the aircraft cleared for departure, Flight SG 9282 resumed operations and reached Mumbai without any further disruptions. No injuries were reported during this incident.
Incidents involving unruly passengers have been on the rise across Indian carriers. Airlines have increasingly faced issues ranging from verbal abuse to physical altercations and serious breaches of in-flight protocols.
The DGCA has issued guidelines to address these issues, including the possibility of fines, flight bans, or other enforcement actions. However, Crew members are trained to manage such situations, but incidents requiring security intervention have become more frequent.
