Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in an interview with Blikk.hu portal that he had not worn before a bulletproof vest and will not wear it after the assassination of Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, who opposed arms shipments to Ukraine and its membership in NATO.
"I have never worn (ball-proof vest – ed.) and I am not wearing it now," said Orban asked the presenter if he was wearing a bullet-proof vest after the Fico assassination.
The Hungarian Prime Minister besides defended Fico's bodyguards, who were criticized for their unprofessional work. “What were these mediocre people expected to do? The Prime Minister is coming out. I go to the crowd all day, too. individual comes and stabs like in Brazil, for example... The assassination of Fico, who repeatedly opposed arms shipments to Ukraine and its membership in NATO, took place on 15 May after a government gathering in the town of Handlevá, 190 kilometres from the Slovak capital Bratislava. The Prime Minister was transported by chopper to a infirmary in Banská Bystrica. The Interior Department reported Fico's condition to be critical. During the bombing, the attacker fired 5 shots towards the head of the cabinet, police stopped the shooter at the scene. Deputy Prime Minister said Fico was hit with 4 bullets, 1 of which pierced politician's belly.
According to the Ministry of Interior, the attacker acted for political reasons. Slovak media reported that the assassination was carried out by 71-year-old author Juraj Cintula, who shot Fico erstwhile he came to greet people close the gathering place of the government. The Interior Ministry reported that the shooter who shot the Slovak Prime Minister acted alone was active in anti-government protests, but was not associated with extremist groups. The Slovak Prime Minister has spoken against sending military personnel to Ukraine. He said that possibly sending NATO troops to that country would lead to an escalation of the conflict. Fico besides said that Slovakia does not belong to countries that are curious in making Russia an enemy.
