Orban isolates Hungary. Controversial congratulations to Putin

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, as the only leader from the countries of the European Union, decided to congratulate Vladimir Putin on his triumph in the controversial presidential election, which marks an highly close relation between Budapest and Moscow.

In his letter to Putin, Orban stressed that relations between Hungary and Russia are based on common respect, which allows dialog on crucial topics even in the face of a complicated geopolitical situation. Orban expressed his conviction that maintaining dialog was crucial for the fast establishment of peace, while at the same time pointing out his willingness to strengthen cooperation with the Kremlin within the scope permitted by global law.

According to authoritative results, Putin obtained as much as 87% of vote support, which is widely regarded as falsified, and thus will presume the office of president of Russia for the 5th time.

Relations between Hungary and Russia, including individual contacts between Orban and Hungarian abroad Minister Peter Szijjarto with high-ranking Russian officials, are controversial and subject to criticism from Western allies. Szijjarto, among another things, met with Russian abroad Minister Sergei Lavrov and Rosatom head Alexey Lichachov, which highlights the extraordinary proximity of Hungarian-Russian diplomatic relations.
