Portugal is presently not 1 of the leaders of NATO in terms of the level of defence spending. From the Polish perspective, it can be safely said that it is 1 of the red lanterns. The government declares a gradual increase in defence spending to the level of only 2 percent of GDP by 2029. They emphasize in talks with NATO that this will be a very large financial effort. At the same time, in 2024, it provided financial support to fighting Ukraine, and this assistance reached €227 million. Portugal, safe today, was 1 of the colonial and maritime powers in the past, and the armed forces and navy were active in military operations on respective continents.
