W The ideas of revitalizing the square of St. Mary Magdalene return to Krakow. It is officially referred to as surface renovation, greening or improving the functionality of this space. However, among the different concepts there are besides those that can lead to the transfer of the monument of Father Piotr Skarga. This is not the first specified situation. akin ideas had already emerged – including in 2008 and 2021. Each time they met with strong opposition of residents and people attached to the historical heritage of Krakow.
The monument of Fr Peter Skarga has been in the square of St Mary Magdalene since 2001. He commemorates 1 of the most outstanding Polish preachers, a patriot and a defender of faith, who throughout his life was associated with Krakow. In the neighbouring church of St Peter and Paul remainder his temporal remains. So the location of the monument is not accidental – it is an crucial part of the past of this place.
St. Mary Magdalene's Square requires renovation and order. However, modernisation of urban space should not lead to the removal of crucial symbols of Polish past and culture. In many European cities, historical architecture, urban green and monuments of prominent figures perfectly coexist, creating a coherent and typical space.
Therefore, we call on the authorities of the city of Krakow to carry out the planned revitalization of the square respecting its historical character and preserving the monument of Fr Piotr Skarga in the present place.
Sign the petition to the authorities of Krakow for the preservation of the monument to the Ecclesiastes Nation in the square of St Mary Magdalene.
It is worth noting that in order to sign the petition, you do not request to be a resident of Krakow or to be peculiarly connected with this city. Fr Piotr Complaint belongs to the most prominent figures in Poland's history, and Kraków is 1 of the most crucial places of our national heritage. Therefore, the concern for the memory of the Ecclesiastes Nation is simply a substance of all Poles.
