Mandatory wellness education enters classes in a week

Since September 2026 a fresh subject – wellness education – will appear in Polish schools. Behind the authoritative name is an ideological task that has raised serious concerns for parents, teachers and communities defending conventional values.

Although any of the sexual content is formally optional, experts warn: it is simply a classical "bore frog cooking" maneuver.

A disaster of attendance that cannot be masked

In the erstwhile school year, as many as 70 percent of primary and secondary school students enrolled in wellness education. In any cities attendance fell even lower – in Rzeszów only 14.5 percent, in Poznań 32.9 percent, and in Gorzów Wielkopolski 35.7%. This is simply a clear signal that Polish society – besides part of the voters of the current coalition – does not want this subject for its children.

Some effort to defend wellness education by comparing it to the old subject of ‘tuning to life in the family’ (WEDZ). That doesn't work. HEAD in fresh years has been losing students naturally – due to the fact that everyone knew that it would shortly vanish from the timetable.

Health education is completely different. It was the flagship task of Minister Barbara Nowacka and the full government. Yet, 70 percent of the students enrolled. There's only about 30 percent left.

It's not just an aversion to extracurricular activities. This is simply a clear public assessment: the fresh subject has not gained the trust of parents.

What is truly left in the mandatory basis?

The Education hotel has announced that “sexual” content will be optional. Sounds like a compromise. In practice, however, many controversial elements have been transferred to the mandatory part under the banner of human rights, anti-discrimination and intellectual health.

In the programming basis:

• marriage and informal relationships are treated equally,
• the breakdown of the household is presented as ‘normal’,
• motherhood appears mainly in the context of threats to the intellectual wellness of a woman, not as a value to be protected and promoted,
• The clear evidence of respect for human life from conception to natural death disappears. Only a general expression of human dignity remains “at all stages of life”.

For parents and all who consider the right to live as a foundation, it is simply a change of large importance. The Constitution of the Polish Republic protects motherhood and life. The curriculum for wellness education goes in the other direction.

Ideology under the coat “health”

The subject is not limited to classical wellness topics. Pupils are to learn to "discognise climate change misinformation" and only indicate "reliable sources". The technological debate in this area is inactive ongoing, yet the school is expected to impose 1 narrative. The same is actual of the block on the "talk of hate" concept, which has been utilized for years to silence voices critical of abortion or sex ideology.

Effect? A kid may leave school with the conviction that expressing legal, conservative views is incorrect and exclusive. It's not wellness education anymore. It's the formation of worldview.

What can parents do?

The situation is not impossible. Parents inactive have the right:

1. Release the kid from an optional sex education block.
2. Monitor what actually happens in compulsory classes and react.
3. Protest publically and request real respect for parental rights.
4. In the elections, settle those who introduce ideology into schools at the expense of constitutional and Christian values.

Last year's experience shows that the mobilisation of parents works. The more families consciously exercise their rights, the harder it will be to push forward the next stages of this project.

Education should service the welfare of the child, not ideology. The school must not become a place where the state authority limits the influence of parents on the ethical and spiritual formation of their offspring. Especially erstwhile it comes to the foundation of respect for human life from conception. Life is simply a gift. And no "health education" should relativise this gift.
