The Council of the Polish Language passed changes to the rules of orthography, which will begin to apply on 1 January 2026. On 18 February, the University of Warsaw hosted linguists debating the situation. The technological gathering was held under the honorary patronage of the Rector of the University of Warsaw Prof. Alojze Z. Newbie.

– Meetings like this are conducive to fulfilling the mission of the University of Warsaw in search of truth, creating a community of cognition and passion. In this case, passion will translate into concrete solutions. Taking care of the language and debating its changes affects not only technological issues, but besides the endurance of the nation – the functioning of future generations depends on it," said Prof. Adam Niewiętajski, PhD and legal manager of the University of Warsaw, welcoming participants.

The debate with the participation of linguists was organised in connection with the communication of the Council of the Polish Language of May 2024, which announced changes to the Polish spelling rules applicable from 1 January 2026. The event took place on 18 February in the legislature Hall in Kazimierzowski Palace on the campus of the University of Warsaw in Krakowskie Przedmieście. The honorary patronage of the gathering was taken by Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw.

– Let me share a brief reflection of a literary student who enters the area of orthography and language. I took a look at Ray's Polish Language document, especially his preamble. 1 passage brought to my attention, namely 2 words: simplification and codification. I looked at the past of literature, or more specifically at the poesy of the 20th century, and realized that actually specified intention appeared in reasoning of literature. I feel that we are touching the mysteries of human nature in this way, as well as certain mechanisms or rules of culture, which cause, on the 1 hand, linguists and, on the another hand, writers, poets to be decently guided by the same intention," said Prof. Tomasz Wójcik, Dean of the Faculty of Polish Studies for the improvement of technological staff.

The discussion panel was attended by: prof. Mirosław Banko (UW), prof. Ewa Kołodziejek (University of Szczeciński), dr hab. Danuta Krzyżyk, prof. UŚ (University of Silesia), prof. Mariusz Rutkowski (University of Warmińsko-Mazurski in Olsztyn), prof. Magdalena Trysińska (UW), prof. Dorota Zdunkiewicz- Jedynak (UW) and prof. Piotr Żmigrodki (Institute of Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences).

The gathering was organized by the Institute of Polish Language University, Society of Language Culture and Foundation of Polish Language.
