Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski confirmed on Saturday that negotiations on the fresh Polish-French treaty are entering a decisive phase. The agreement between Warsaw and Paris is to be signed before the vacation and can importantly strengthen the cooperation of both countries.
"Premium Treaty" – What does the agreement include?
"Before the summertime we intend to sign a fresh Polish-French treaty. France calls it the Premium Treaty," Sikorski reported in a recording published on platform X.
As the head of Polish diplomacy explained, the word “premium” is full justified due to the fact that the paper covers a wide scope of cooperation – “from culture to the economy, with strong safety clauses”. The Minister besides added that a akin agreement is presently being negotiated with Britain.
Prime Minister Tusk on the groundbreaking nature of the agreement
Prime Minister Donald Tusk besides referred to the matter, stressing the importance of a fresh agreement for Europe's security.
"We are finalising work on the treaty between Poland and France. There are many indications that this could be a breakthrough treaty, especially in the context of common safety guarantees for Europe and Poland," said the head of the government.
As reported on Thursday by TVP World, Poland and France are close to signing a common safety warrant agreement. Tusk confirmed that the talks were at an end phase and the paper could be signed shortly.
"We are slow finalising the treaty between Poland and France. I hope we will be ready to sign it soon," said the Prime Minister after gathering with president Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
Security, energy and common policy towards Russia
During a summit of coalitions supporting Ukraine, in which Tusk participated, a common position was established towards Russia. Macron agreed that possibly sending stabilization forces to Ukraine must not weaken the defence capabilities of NATO's east flank states.
"Poland will work more effectively for peace if it effectively secures its own borders. yet everyone understood this,” the Polish Prime Minister emphasized.
Europe's relations with the United States and the request to keep a common policy towards Russia were besides discussed, despite Hungary's opposition.
"We cannot number on Hungary to vote to extend sanctions against Russia," Tusk noted.
French Ambassador: "To bring relations to a fresh level"
The French Ambassador to Poland Étienne de Pontins defined the fresh agreement as a "premium treaty" and stressed that the agreement would importantly deepen the cooperation of both countries.
"We must bring French-Polish relations to a level where we keep them with key partners in the EU: Italy, Spain and Germany," said de Pontins in an interview with the Polish Press Agency.
This will be the first specified agreement France will sign with a country outside its immediate neighbourhood. The paper will cover a wide scope of cooperation, with a peculiar emphasis on defence and energy issues.
