New! Universities in France object to the right-wing win

Prestigious universities in France unanimously expressed their concerns about the dominance of the far right in the first circular of parliamentary elections. A joint message issued by France Universités, an organization that brings together 74 universities and conferences of university directors, stressed that winning the far right represents a "immediate, real and unseen threat" to the country's education system.

France Universités warned that the National Unity (NN) is pursuing a policy of exclusion and rejection, which poses a real threat to higher education. The mission of French education is to give young people equal opportunities, regardless of their professional path, origin or social environment. Representatives of higher education institutions pointed out that the second circular of elections is at stake not only in the future of universities and investigation institutes, but above all in the value of the V Republic.

Universities in France, but not only

Not only universities, but besides various social organisations, associations and trade unions, expressed their concerns. A joint appeal issued by at least a 100 organisations called for a vote against the far right. The Human Rights League, a non-governmental organization operating since 1898, stressed the request to mobilize all forces to defeat the RN in the upcoming second circular of elections.

The consequence of the first circular of parliamentary elections, in which the National Unity won, sparked a wave of reaction across the country. Second place was the left-wing coalition of the fresh People's Front, and at the 3rd presidential camp, the formation of president Emmanuel Macron.

Common Position

As in Poland, where universities besides express their opposition to the triumph of the right, the French educational institutions uphold left-wing and liberal values. The university's common position underlines their function as guardians not only of cognition but besides of fundamental social values.
