Minister of National Education Barbara Nowacka found herself in the heat of criticism after a controversial message at the global conference “We are a memory. Teaching past is learning to talk.” The words that fell from her mouth caused a wave of outrage in the country and abroad. The MEN explain that this was a "speak", but many believe that this explanation is not enough.
Nowacka talks about “Polish Nazis” at an global conference
During her speech at the conference commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the German Auschwitz-Birkenau camp Barbara Nowacka said that “On the territory occupied by Germany, Polish Nazis built camps that were labour camps and then became camps of mass extermination.” These words caused immediate outrage in the media and on the political stage. In particular, it was stressed that specified a phrase is misleading, suggesting that Poles were complicit in the Holocaust.
The Ministry of National Education tried to ease the situation, explaining that the minister had another passage of the speech prepared, which read: "In the German-occupied area, the Nazis built camps which were labour camps and then became mass extermination camps". MEN described Nowack's message as "a slip of the tongue".
A wave of criticism from opposition and media
Law and Justice politicians, as well as any of the public, did not accept MEN translations. Mr Rafał Bochenek called the words "disgusting" and recalled that Poles have been fighting for historical fact on the global phase for years. Mr Dariusz Stefaniuk commented that specified statements were scandalous and inappropriate for the minister of education.
Journalist Marzena Paczuska besides did not cover the outrage. She pointed out that since there was a slip of the tongue, why Nowacka did not respond immediately to her own mistake. Is MEN effectively defending his boss?
MEN's explanation that it was just a mistake does not convince everyone. Many observers believe that specified words should not be made at the global conference, especially in the context of Poland's long-term efforts to defend historical truth.
The words of Nowacka besides sparked patriotic and historical reactions. It was stressed that Poland, as the country that suffered most under German occupation, must especially care for correct presentation of historical facts.
