On the border between North Korea and South Korea there was another provocation from Pyongyang. The South Korean army reported that from Saturday to Sunday morning about 330 balloons filled with waste moved across the border. Over 80 of these balloons have fallen into South Korea. The provocation at the border has provoked outrage among the confederate residents.
The bags that fell to South Korean dirt mostly contained waste and plastic. The first analyses indicate that there were no hazardous substances in them, but the military advised citizens not to contact objects, indicating the possible risks associated with specified shipments.
This different form of aggression is the consequence of North Korea to the actions of South Korean activist groups who regularly send North balloons with anti-regime flyers. These actions aim to supply North Korean residents with information independent of government propaganda, which provokes Pyongyang's anger.
History of tensions
The relations between Korea are now rated the worst in decades. Since the end of the Korean War in 1953, the 2 states have formally remained at war due to the fact that the conflict ended with a truce alternatively than a peace treaty.
This hostile atmosphere is further fueled by regular provocations and military demonstrations of forces.

Political threats and retaliation
A week ago, North Korean Deputy Minister of Defence, Kim Kang Il, announced the suspension of the "retaliation action" for the collection of pamphlets aimed at the government in Pyongyang. However, he threatened that if the drop of propaganda leaflets was resumed, Pyongyang would send back “the garbage 100 times more”.
Already on Wednesday night, on Thursday, South Korean activists sent another batch of flyers to the North, which met with an immediate consequence in the form of waste balloons.
Conflict escalation
At the end of December last year, North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, ordered preparations for “a war that could start at any time”. He besides condemned the joint military exercises of Seoul and Washington, accusing them of creating a “continuous and uncontrolled crisis situation”. This kind of rhetoric, combined with fresh incidents, increases the hazard of further escalation and destabilisation of the region.
Provocation at the border. What's next?
The situation in the Korean Peninsula remains highly tense, and fresh events only deepen existing divisions. The global community is looking at developments with concern, hoping for a diplomatic solution to the conflict. However, as past shows, any provocation can become a spark that will ignite a larger conflict.
