In the coming weeks, 2 key projects will be launched to improve pedestrian and public transport, which will include the Śródmieście area and the bus way on Grunwaldzka Street from Oliwa towards Słowackiego Street. Here is simply a detailed overview of these investments and their importance to residents and visitors to Gdańsk.

One of the main elements of improving pedestrian communication in Gdańsk is the construction of the ground crossing at Gdańsk Główny station. This investment aims to facilitate walking in the pedestrian area, especially for those with traffic restrictions, carers with tiny children and tourists with luggage.

Ground passage for pedestrians

The fresh ground crossing at Gdańsk Central Station is another step in the implementation of the city's pedestrian policy. The president of Gdańsk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, emphasises:

Summer is always the time for renovations, which we effort to do so that they are as least burdensome as possible. Already on Monday, 29 July, in the vicinity of the erstwhile cinema Krwetka will begin work on the construction of the ground crossing leading from the Main Station and tram and bus stops, from which the inhabitants of Gdańsk and tourists usage it so much," says Aleksandra Dulkiewicz.

The works are planned to be completed at the end of November, allowing pedestrians to decision more easy between the tram platforms and the station without having to usage underground passages.

Benefits for pedestrians and cyclists

The fresh passage will supply a more convenient access to tram platforms from both sides of Podwala Grodzki. In addition, the construction of the bicycle way will facilitate the movement of cyclists and users of scooters, whose number in Gdańsk is steadily increasing.

Piotr Grzelak, deputy president for sustainable improvement and the economy, adds:

"Solutions that are introduced step by step in Gdańsk, i.e. calming traffic, or zones of parallel intersections do not reduce the liquidity of motor traffic".

Stage work

The construction work has been divided into 4 stages to minimise the obstacles to the traffic of cars and to guarantee the constant traffic of trams on this route.

  1. Stage I. The end of July – The closure of the utmost left lane at the tram platform and the partial shutdown of the halt towards Sopot.
  2. Stage II. Half of August – Close of the utmost left lane at the tram platform and partial shutdown of the halt towards Pruszcz.
  3. Stage III. End of September – beginning of ground pedestrian crossing and construction of the second part of platforms and subsequent worlds.
  4. Stage IV. Finishing works – Finishing works and closure of only utmost belts at the platform for safety of foundation and concrete construction.

Agata Lewandowska, Municipal Traffic Engineer, notes:

Changes in the organization of traffic are closely linked to the technology of works, sometimes their execution and the request to take belts for construction. Throughout the implementation, 2 lanes will be maintained both towards Wrzeszcz and towards Pruszcz Gdański.

Modernisation of track crossings at the Baltic Gallery

Another crucial investment is the modernisation of track crossings at the Baltic Gallery. The work will begin on 27 July and last until 10 August. The main nonsubjective of this modernization is to replace the surface with a more durable and unchangeable surface, which is peculiarly crucial in high-traffic locations.

Work in 2 stages

The modernisation work will be carried out in 2 stages:

  1. Stage I: 27.07 1.00 – 02.08 00:00 – Complete closure of the crossing of the track towards the Zaspa and the control off of the consecutive and left lane to turn from the all. Soldiers Cursed towards the Zaspa and Oliwa.
  2. Stage II: 03.08 1.00 – 10.08 3.00 – Restoring traffic through the track towards the Zaspa, closing the junction towards the Bear and turning the lane to the left towards the centre and driving straight to the Al. Soldiers Cursed from the overpass within Kościuszko Street.

Piotr Borawski, Deputy president for Mobility and Security, emphasises:

The main nonsubjective of upgrading the crossings of the track at the Baltic Gallery is to replace the surface. The existing rubber toll plates will be replaced by track plates.

Changes in public transport

The modernisation work will introduce crucial changes in public transport. Tram traffic will be stopped and bus replacement communication will function. On the section from the depot stops 01.02 at the Polish Army al. until the Baltic Opera junction the trams will not ride, and part of the line will be suspended. Temporary tram lines and bus replacement communication will be launched.

Wojciech Siółkowski, manager of the Municipal Transport Board, noted:

Important tip for those who will control from bus to tram. On the T6 bus, it is best to get to the end of the bus, until the halt “KPM cuts”.

Designation of buspas in Grunwaldzka

As part of activities aimed at improving public transport, the city of Gdańsk decided to appoint a buspas as al. Grunwaldzka. Buspas aims to improve punctuality and increase bus frequency, which will contribute to the attractiveness of public transport.

Testing a fresh solution

Piotr Borawski, Deputy president for Mobility and Security, reports:

In summertime months, we would like to check and test the buspas in Grunwaldska. On Monday, July 29, in the first phase we will launch a buspas from the University Library halt to the Polish Army street.

After completion of the renovation of the track close the Baltic Gallery, the buspas will be extended until the intersection with al. Cursed Soldiers. The city will measure this solution after 3 months of its operation to measure its impact on the fluidity of traffic and the efficiency of bus communication.
