No more hidden honey country by sellers

The information on the honey description on the mixture originating in or outside the European Union is now mysterious. Fortunately, this situation will change, and we will no longer be exposed to buying a product of unknown origin. From 18 April, honey sold in Poland will gotta contain precise information about the country of origin.

The fresh regulations will only apply to honey marketed from 18 April. Therefore, honey with imprecise marking will be available in stores for a certain period of time. Under the fresh rules, the general wording on honey labels, specified as ‘a mixture of honey originating in the EU’ or ‘a mixture of honey originating from outside the EU’, will be replaced by circumstantial names of the countries from which honey originates. Even in the case of a mixture of honeys from different countries, we will have information about their origin.

What prompted these changes? A year ago, in the spring of 2023, the European Commission began work on modifying EU trade standards, including on honey directives. The existing Directive 2001/110/EC, which regulates the marketing quality of honey on the EU marketplace and in individual associate States, is to be updated. Key changes supply for an work to designate the country of origin of honey and to establish an EU honey traceability strategy to be followed.

This change is due to the fact that so far the information provided to the consumer was incomplete. The client did not know what he was buying and where precisely the product came from says Przemysław Rujna, General Secretary of the Association of the Polish Chamber of Honey. “That is why we have tried very hard in the European Union, and in Polish government to change that for the client to be informed,” adds Rujna.

Label modifications will cover around 70 percent of the products available in stores in Poland – which corresponds to blends which represent a crucial part of the full honey pool sold retail. The main nonsubjective of these changes is to supply more comprehensive information for consumers, which – according to the message of the Polish home of Honey – may affect their approach and purchasing decisions.

Poland presently ranks 3rd in terms of volume of the EU honey market, both as an importer and exporter. Germany and Belgium are ahead of us. According to data from the Polish home of Honey, the average Pole consumes about 1 kilogram of honey per individual per year, which is lower than the average for Western European countries, of 1.7 kg, and lower than the consumption level in countries specified as Greece, where it reaches 5 kilograms. In 2022 the full consumption of honey in Poland amounted to 38 1000 tonnes, while Polish beekeepers collected a full of 25 1000 tonnes of honey. To a large extent, honey is imported from Ukraine, as is the case with another EU and US countries. Any supply that crosses borders shall be subject to veterinary checks.
