On Monday 29 September, the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław reported the death of architect Zenon Prętczyński.
Zenon Prętczyński is dead
"We took with large sadness present the news about the departure of Zenon Prętczyński – Nestor of Wrocław architecture, 1 of the most active architects of post-war Wrocław and our long-standing friend" – wrote the employees of the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław. The facility offered condolences to the household and loved ones of the deceased.
Zenon Prętczyński has since 1952 been active in housing destroyed after the war of Wrocław. His most crucial architectural achievements include the building of Primary School No. 84 at 20 Łukasz Górnickiego Street and the church of St.
He was besides co-author of the housing and service complex Kościuszko Housing District. In 1954–1965 and 1971–1979 he was associated with the plan office of the Wrocław City Project, in which he served as the chief designer of school investments.
Prętczyński was the Nestor of Wroclaw architecture
As the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław pointed out, Prętczyński was a "passionate and tireless chronicler of the past of Wrocław, for years he sustained the memory of the most crucial moments and figures in the post-war past of the city".
The architect was besides the author of many memories of Wrocław's architecture and its creators and respective twelve articles devoted to Wrocław culture published in the local edition of "Gazeta Wyborcza".
He received many awards for his activity. Among them can be mentioned the title of the Construction Wrocław in 1960, Knight's Cross of the Order of Polish Revival in 1987, Gold Badge of the Wrocław Society of Lovers for activity for city improvement in 1996.
In 2012, the architect received the Gold Badge of the Association of Polish Architects and Badge for the 60th anniversary of the creative work awarded by the Wrocław branch of SARP. In January 2026 Zenon Prętczyński would have turned 100.
