The Gdańsk City improvement Directorate conducts a tender procedure for restoring... the functionality of the entrance doors in the Watershed. The budget allocated PLN 360 1000 for this purpose.
The Watershed, a modern building in the heart of Gdańsk, was expected to become the fresh seat of the Institute of Urban Culture and the cultural centre of the city. Its name refers to the historical pump station, which has functioned in Gdańsk since the 16th century.
The fresh facility, built as part of a controversial investment related to the Gdańsk Forum, was aimed not only at preserving the heritage, but besides at providing people and tourists with space for cultural meetings, exhibitions and another events.
Although the building itself will not be officially opened until September 2023, its past is already full of turmoil. The investment, which cost around PLN 18 million, was carried out with a five-year delay, and the full maintenance of an empty facility until that minute consumed additional hundreds of thousands of PLN.
Door joinery replacement
Despite modern construction and equipment that cost millions, the building did not escape the first faults. Only 1 year after its opening, work is planned to reconstruct the functionality of the external door joinery, which surprises, given the freshness of the building.
The object of the investment is to reconstruct the full functionality of the external carpentry by replacing the selected doors in the Water Kunszt building at 11th marketplace in Gdańsk and installing the air curtain above the entrance to the bistro in the Water Kunszt – we read the tender documentation.
The full cost of these works will be PLN 360 thousand.

Watershed for repair
The full situation may awaken a grin of pity. The modern building, which was to be the glory of the city and a testament to the care of heritage and culture, requires repairs even before opening.
This is not the best evidence for the investment, which has already caused many controversy. Although the Water Kunszt is expected to service for many years as a cultural centre, it is the first sign that it may not be as durable as its designers expected.
