Lufthansa Cargo announced the expansion of its cargo port at Frankfurt Airport. The investment, valued at almost EUR 600 million (more than PLN 2.5 billion), met with the tumultuous reactions of Law and Justice (PiS) politicians. The politicians expressed their concern, stressing that the improvement of the German logistics infrastructure is taking place at the expense of akin projects in Poland, specified as the Central Communication Port (CPK).
Lufthansa Cargo plans to grow its transhipment centre under the ‘LCCevo’ project. The aim of the investment is to strengthen the position of Frankfurt Airport as a key European logistics hub. The area of the fresh complex will be 330 000 square meters and its construction will be carried out in stages, completed by 2030. The company announced that upgrading the infrastructure would contribute to greater efficiency and sustainability.
Reactions of PiS politicians
Lufthansa's decision was met with strong comments from PiS politicians who stressed that the improvement of the German cargo sector is taking place at the expense of Poland. Mariusz Błaszczak commented that "this is the policy of the knee position", referring to the alleged deficiency of support for the Polish CPK task by erstwhile Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Daniel Obietek, the Euro MP of the Law and Justice, besides expressed his dissatisfaction, stressing that Germany can make its infrastructure without obstacles, while akin investments are blocked in Poland. Anita Czerwińska added that the improvement of the German cargo sector is simply a manifestation of a deficiency of strategy in Polish transport policy.
Charges against Donald Tusk
Former Minister of State Assets, Jacek Sasin, suggested that the extension of the German airport is evidence that the decisions taken by the erstwhile PO-PSL government contributed to the failure of key opportunities for Poland. Sasin stated that Donald Tusk's government had made decisions that directed immense revenues from the cargo marketplace to Germany alternatively of Poland. PiS politicians express concern that giving up investment in CPK could consequence in billions of losses for the Polish budget.
Central Communication Port vs Frankfurt
Both critics and supporters of building the CPK have been arguing for years about the meaning and costs of this gigantic project. PiS politicians emphasize that the improvement of CPK could bring large financial benefits to Poland, including 200 billion PLN in gross by 2060. Meanwhile, the improvement of Frankfurt strengthens the German cargo transport position, which, according to PiS politicians, weakens Poland's competitiveness.
