As of Monday, July 1, 2024, the amendment of the law on assistance to Ukrainian citizens in connection with the armed conflict in the territory of that country will enter into force. The fresh rules introduce crucial changes that will affect the lives of both refugees and those who have given them refuge in Poland.

One of the key changes is the liquidation of Article 13 of the Act, on the basis of which a cash payment of PLN 40 per night was paid for persons who provided accommodation and food in their homes. For many, it was a clean business, although it did not deal with late payments.

As of June 30, 2024, this benefit will cease to apply and those hosting refugees will no longer receive these funds. No exceptions to this regulation are provided.

What does this mean for host refugees?

The decision to terminate the service introduces quite a few uncertainty for those who have so far supported refugees by offering them a place in their homes. For many hosts 40 PLN per day was a crucial support, helping to cover additional costs related to accommodation and catering of guests.

The end of subsidies can force any to make hard decisions about continuing to supply shelter. Accommodation of Ukrainians for money simply ends.

Transfer to collective accommodation facilities

Due to this change, for example, the Municipal Office in Gdańsk appeals to people who have decided to decision to collective accommodation facilities offered by the Pomeranian Provincial Office to study their request by 18 June 2024.

The application can be made at the Information Point located in Gdańsk Centre of Benefits at 32/34 Kartuska Street. After this date, the list of persons will be forwarded to the Department of safety and Crisis Management of the Pomeranian Voivodeship Office.

The same is actual in another municipalities.

What's next for refugees? Accommodation of Ukrainians

These changes pose additional challenges for Ukrainian citizens residing in Poland. The request to decision to collective accommodation facilities may mean a change of residence for many of them, which entails additional adaptation difficulties.

It is crucial for refugees to have access to appropriate information and support so that they can go smoothly through this hard period.
