Karol Nawrocki examined respective 100 cases of foreigners concerning Polish citizenship and in many cases refused, reported on 20 August Gazeta.pl. The President's office had previously reported that in its first year of presidency he gave citizenship to 61 people. The conclusion is simple: citizenship cannot be an automatic.
Nationality is simply a state decision, not a form
Gazeta.pl stated that among the people who were given Polish citizenship by Karol Nawrocki were citizens of Ukraine, Vietnam and Israel. The portal besides wrote that the president in respective 100 cases supported the conclusions of people who no longer wanted to be Polish citizens, and in many another cases exercised the right to refuse.
This is not a method trivia from the law firm's circulation. Citizenship means entering a political community, rights and obligations towards the Republic. Therefore, a country that treats its own passport as a stamp at the end of the procedure itself reduces its sovereignty.
Tougher line from the Presidential Palace
The President's office in summary of the first year of office stated that Karol Nawrocki granted Polish citizenship to 61 people. This is simply a low number against the background of migration scale and the expectations of environments that would want faster naturalization. To the Polish right, that is no reason to be ashamed. It is simply a signal that the head of state understands the importance of signing specified a decision.
It is worth reminding that the president has already directed to the Sejm draft amendment of the Polish Citizenship Act. He intended to extend the minimum period of uninterrupted residence required for designation of the foreigner as a citizen from 3 to 10 years. It's logical. Poland is not obliged to shorten the way to citizenship simply due to the fact that the climate of liberal force requires it.
National interest before migration pressure
The substance is more crucial than individual provisions. In fresh years Poland has become a state of mass labour and war immigration. This raises real questions about integration, security, loyalty to the state and the ability of institutions to control the process. Who pretends that these questions are not there, then conducts politics blindly.
DN has already written about the scale of the phenomenon in the text about this, How many Ukrainians are in Poland today. The presence of foreigners alone is not a charge against people. The problem begins erstwhile elites want to impose on Poles the belief that the national state has no right to make demands.
Polish community requires criteria
Polish citizenship must mean a lasting relation with Poland: language, loyalty, work, acceptance of the legal order and respect for Polish history. It's not about closing the country. It's about defending the sense of a political community. Unrequired citizenship rapidly becomes a social instrument or a convenient travel document.
Nawrocki's decisions fall into a wider dispute over the model of the state. Should Poland decide who it accepts to the civilian society, or should it slow succumb to administrative, media and Brussels pressures? For national interest, the answer is clear: citizenship is simply a privilege and a commitment, not a service available after waiting for a adequate number of months.
