Nawrocki appeals to Ukrainian authorities. Demands concrete action

Friday is the anniversary of bloody Sunday in Volyn. The Polish Parliament established this day on the Day of Memory of Poles – victims of genocide made by the CNS-UPA at the east Borders of the Second Republic. President-elect Karol Nawrocki addressed the Ukrainian authorities today. He has a clear appeal.


"Blood Sunday, July 11, 1943 symbolizes apogee of the cruelty of UPA criminals. For us Poles this day is simply a time of reflection and prayer, memories of the savagely murdered children, women and old people. It is besides a memory of Polish villages, from which there is no trace. Sometimes there is simply a lonely cross there today" – we read.

President-elect stressed that the victims deserve a decent burial, and their families have the right to pray on the graves of their loved ones. Karol Nawrocki announced that he intended to "consistently request a systemic solution by the Ukrainian authorities of the cases of consent to the search and exhumation of victims of the Volynsk genocide. Reconciliation can only be based on truth."

Today, celebrations are held throughout the country to commemorate the victims of the Volyn massacre. The central celebrations take place in Warsaw, and in Chełma, the president of the elect is expected to appear at the building Museum of Memory of the Victims of the Volynian Mass.

The President-in-Office, Andrzej Duda, besides spoke: "Only on the fact – even the most hard 1 – can build mature and sincere relations between nations, including between Poles and Ukrainians".

"Today another anniversary of Bloody Sunday - National Day of Memory about Poles – Victims of Genocide made by the CNS and the UPA on the east lands of the Second Republic of Poland – this year it was first celebrated as a state holiday" - Duda said.

In his entry he reminded that on 11 July 1943 it was 1 of the most tragic days in Poland's history. "It was the day of the culmination of absolute crime. At the hands of Ukrainian nationalists, our defenseless compatriots - average people, civilians, innocent victims, frequently killed in churches, where they attended Sunday Masses of saints.

They were murdered due to the fact that they were Poles," he continued.



The president stressed that we have a right to know where the remains lie. "We want to be able to say goodbye to our loved ones, pray at their graves and light candles. The right to commemorate the victims, especially their common commemoration, is an highly crucial component of reconciliation and building a good future," he wrote.

The post concluded with an appeal: "Truth and memory do not gotta share – if they lead to common understanding, reconciliation and common concern for a safe future".
