A summit of Presidents and Prime Ministers of 8 Baltic countries and Vice-President of the European Commission was held in Helsinki, Finland. On Tuesday, January 14, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte reported that "NATO will set up the Baltic defender to strengthen safety in the Baltic utilizing frigates, patrol aircraft and another weapons". A message issued after the summit stated, inter alia, that the NATO States in the Baltic Sea region reserve the right to take action against ships suspected to circumvent sanctions and pose a safety threat.
