“If China attacks Taiwan, Beijing can ask Moscow to open a second front against NATO states,” said NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in an interview with “The fresh York Times”. Fears of possible Chinese military intervention in Taiwan increased importantly after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
NATO chief warns against Russia's plan
"More and more people are aware, and let's not be naive that if Xi Jinping decides to attack Taiwan, he will first call Vladimir Putin and say, "Look, I am going to do this, I request you to take them in Europe, attacking NATO territory," Rutte described.
Most likely, this is the situation. And to halt them, we gotta do 2 things. Firstly, NATO must be strong adequate for the Russians to never dare. Secondly, cooperation with the Indo-Pacific region, which is very powerfully supported by president Trump," added the NATO chief.
Western analysts and government representatives are alerting Russia's expanding military effort during the ongoing war in Ukraine. According to data from the global Institute for strategical Studies, in 2024 the Russian defence budget increased by 42 percent in real terms, reaching $462 billion.
Why does China care so much about Taiwan?
In the opinion of NATO states, the intensification of Russian military preparations, sabotage activities and continued aggression towards Ukraine is simply a sign that urgently requires increased investment in safety and deterrence.
Let us remind at the same time that China wants to take over Taiwan, due to the fact that they treat it as a rebellious state and part of their territory. For Beijing, regaining the island is simply a substance of prestige, ideology and maintaining the unity of the state.
However, Taiwan acts de facto as an independent state, which undermines the power of the Communist organization of China and can encourage another regions, specified as Tibet or Xinjiang, to prosecute akin goals.
Additionally, the island is of large strategical importance – it lies on key maritime routes and is simply a planet leader in the production of microprocessors. Taiwan's takeover would give China a technological advantage and strengthen its influence in the region and in the world.
