On Thursday morning, an different event occurred in 1 of the primary schools in Warsaw. The smoke that appeared in the building was not the consequence of a fire, but of a chemical reaction reaching utmost heat. How did this different situation occur?
Evacuation of the school at Rakowiecka. Firefighters in action
The study of smoke at the Social simple School No. 26 at 32 Rakowiecka Street was received by the fire department just after 9:00. Rescue teams were immediately deployed and students and workers were evacuated.
"After 9:00 a.m., JRG 3 received a study concerning smoke extraction at the Social simple School No. 26 at 32 Rakowiecka Street. Students and teachers were evacuated immediately. Action continues, without fire features. There is besides a Specialist Chemical and Environmental Rescue Group on site to support activities and identify high-temperature substances” – informed the Municipal office of the State Fire Department in Warsaw.
Not a fire, a chemical reaction. What did the firemen discover?
Initially a simple fire was suspected, but it turned out that the origin of the problem was a dangerous substance. After careful analysis, firefighters established that smoke was extracted from a mixture of aluminum and iron, which at the time of intervention had a temperature exceeding 300 degrees Celsius!
‘The identified substance that caused the smoke is simply a mixture of aluminium and iron. Its temperature at the time of arrival is over 300 degrees Celsius” – is given in an authoritative communication.
Long-term rescue. How was the threat removed?
Due to the advanced temperature of the substance, it was safe to remove only after it cooled to about 30 degrees Celsius. The action lasted over four hoursand participated six fire brigades.
For now, it is not known how the dangerous mixture came to school. It can be handled by the appropriate service. Fortunately, thanks to the fast reaction of firefighters and evacuations, nobody was hurt.
