The ultimate Court of Russia has withdrawn the ban on the activities of the Taliban group in its territory by deleting them from the list of terrorist organisations. The Taliban has been on the list since 2003.
Nevertheless, Moscow has kept in constant contact with them over the last fewer years. Representatives of the Taliban were frequently invited to a ceremony attended by Russian president Vladimir Putin. The head of state utilized the word “soccers” to describe them.
According to Russian law, an organisation on the list of terrorist groups may be removed from the list if it concludes its activity "directed to propaganda, justification and supportterrorism’.
From 2016 to 2025, at least 37 Russian residents were punished for their cooperation with “Taliban”.
The Taliban regained power in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of US troops in 2021. Their government has so far not been recognized by any state of the world, including Russia.
