48 F-35A, or 5th generation multi-role aircraft, are planned to be purchased by Romania. The machines will form part of 3 combat squadrons and will replace the F-16AM/BMs presently being completed there at a 1:1 ratio (Romania has acquired 49 F-16s in total).
