Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki waived parliamentary immunity in connection with allegations concerning the organisation of alleged envelope elections.

The Public Prosecutor's Office accuses him of exceeding his powers by taking action to prepare and hold the presidential elections on 10 May 2020 by correspondence only. The decision to waive immunity was confirmed by the Sejm Rules Committee.

Morawiecki stated: “I renounced immunity due to the fact that I know that truth, law and justice will prevail.”

Justice Minister Adam Bodnar referred to this decision, stating:

– I appreciate Matthew Morawiecki's resignation. There's no better way to answer the prosecutor's allegations than to mention to them with an open visor.

He besides added that he hoped that there would be no problem with the erstwhile Prime Minister's presence within the set time limit, explaining and answering questions.

The case concerns the 2020 decision erstwhile Prime Minister Morawiecki obliged the Polish Post to prepare the presidential elections in correspondence. The Provincial Administrative Court in Warsaw ruled that this decision grossly violated the law, including the constitution and the electoral code.

The waiver of immunity by the erstwhile Prime Minister opens the way for further legal action on this matter.
